SPOT AND STAIN REMOVAL
Carpet appearance depends on proper upkeep and maintenance. Spot and stain removal must be performed on a daily basis to ensure its best possible appearance. Speed is the key word in the removal of spots and stains. When an accident occurs, immediately absorb as much liquid or spillage as possible by blotting with white tissues or paper towels, sponges or other absorbent materials, such as white terry cloth towels or rags. In the case of paint, grease or other viscous compounds, use a spoon, dull knife or bone scraper to remove as much material as possible.
Franklin offers a wide range of spot and stain removal products that perform well and help maintain your carpets best appearance. This section will cover the basics of spotting as well as specialized spotting procedures. Spots and stains are most often either water or solvent soluble. Please refer to the stain removal guide to determine which Franklin product eliminates common and not-so-common spots and stains.
IMPORTANT! Always pre-test spotters for color fastness by spraying on a white cloth or tissue and pressing against an inconspicuous area of the carpet. If color is transferred to the cloth or tissue, do not use that spotter.

General Stain Treatment Information
- Spots should be removed as soon as they are discovered. Spots left too long can discolor and stain the carpet depending on the makeup of the stain and the type of carpet.
- Always pre-test the spotter in a hidden area to check for carpet color fastness.
- Always blot with a white cloth to avoid color transfer from the cloth to the carpet.
- Always rinse with clear water (by hand or with an extractor) to remove any residue of the spotter. This will help to prevent the residue from reappearing as a new spot by attracting new dirt.
- Always remember to recommend Protection Plus on non-stain resistant carpeting. This will protect the capet, help to resist dirt, water penetration, and result in carpets that are easier to keep clean.

Instructions:
- Post wet floor signs in work areas.
- Remove excess liquid material and scrape any solid soils with a dull knife, bone scraper or spoon.
- Apply appropriate spotter around the outside of the spot and work inward (to avoid spreading the spot). Another valuable technique is to circle the spot or stain with clear water to hold the cleaning process in the affected area. Additional instructions are included in the Spot and Stain Removal Guide.
- Agitate the area with the flat end of the carpet spotter brush or the bone scraper. Always work the spot inward, being careful not to spread the spot.
- Blot up the spot using a clean white cotton cloth. Firmly press the cloth down on the spotted area. Avoid rubbing stains, as that drives the stain downward. Apply pressure and keep turning the blotting material. This will allow the soil to transfer from the carpet to the cloth.
- Brush Method – fold the cloth in half and place it on the spot. Using the bristle end of the carpet spotting brush firmly tap the back of the cloth. This will allow the soil to be transferred from the carpet to the cloth without smearing the spot further.
- Using the bottle of fresh water, spray the cleaned area and using a clean cloth, blot the rinsed area. Allow to dry.
- Repeat steps 2 thru 5 if necessary.
- Extract or shampoo as required.
- Put away equipment and supplies.
Professional Maintenance Tips:
- Always wear Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).
- Always work the spot inward, being careful not to spread the spot.
- Never apply refrigerant type spotters to a wet carpet. The fibers may freeze, break off and leave a hole in the carpet.
- If furniture must be replaced before carpet is dry, place protective plastic film or aluminum foil under legs of the furniture to prevent rust.
